I'll try to answer one of your minor questions...

If I'm not mistaken, the Subversion development team tries to be very
clear that SVN is just a version control system and not a software
configuration management suit.

I'm assuming this may change in the future, but for now Subversion
just tracks changes in file data, it doesn't matter if the file data
is computer source code or musical scores.

When people add all their own additional custom scripts and wrappers
onto SVN, then looks more like a software configuration manager.
