I'm apparently misremembering some earlier discussion:

which was discussing the fact that XML files are not necessarily pure text
(since they can contain DATA segments which are effectively binary). There was
some discussion of external XML diff programs to handle conflicts better, since
the native diff is unaware of the XML structure.
