Even if you convince them that umlauts are the proper spelling of some
words, then you've got the problem of getting them to know how to type
them. Most US keyboard mappings don't make this particularly easy
Even XFree86 makes you go out of your way to setup a Multi_key. Though
once you've done that it's relatively easy to type various characters.
