subversion fails to import a directory structure with "svn: Can't recode string"

Subversion fails to import the directory structure of which the ls -Rl
is included as an attachment with the message: "svn: Can't recode
string" after the first part looks to be imported correctly. Other
directory structures imported fine. Some systems info
Client: gentoo linux 2004.1 subversion version info included as
attachment ClientVersion.txt.
Server: OpenBSD 3.5 (ServerVersion.txt)
I'm using svn+ssh to connect to the server.

Any guidance or feedback is highly appreciated.
