Please go back to the chalkboard and write the following 100 times:

1.0.x is not where we add new features. [This change may feel like a
bugfix, but it's not; it's a new feature which works around someone
else's bug. You don't have to write this parenthetical. :) ]

The API litmus test for 1.0.x bugfixes is not "without breaking APIs"
but "without in any way changing the API." Adding new functions isn't
okay either.
