Because there was nothing better at the time. Usually, these fatal bugs are
either OS-dependent (4.0.x doesn't work correctly on MacOS X) or
multi-processor-dependent (i.e. 4.1.x doesn't work on MP boxes under load due
to race conditions).

But, if someone submits a bug report that says that their DB is corrupted, the
first thing *I* will say is that they should be using 4.2.x.

No, what I'm saying is that we shouldn't be telling people to use 4.0 or 4.1.
And, that's exactly what we say in INSTALL. -- justin
