viewcvs causing lockups

BenS asked me to post this.

For several months I've been fighting lockups on the linux1394 repo. It
would always occur because of viewcvs (disabling viewcvs fixed things).
The only access methods I have enabled are svnserve (from inetd) and
viewcvs.

Both are running as www-data.www-data user/group. At first, this was
occuring with svn 0.31 on an ia64 box. I switched to a sparc64 and it
still occured. I switched to svn 0.37, httpd 2.0.48 and db4.2, and
things are still occuring. I have the latest viewcvs (as of today)
aswell (I was using a few month old version of viewcvs).

Sometimes I can catch a zombie apache2 process when it happens. Sussman
thinks that a viewcvs process may be crashing and leaving the db's in a
bad state.
