Oh, I'd certainly MUCH prefer a working set of COM bindings, but I
recall having my suspicions confirmed that they had been abandoned. I
figure there's a much better chance of getting DLLs than getting COM
bindings working.

I don't have enough COM experience in C/C++ to work on those bindings
myself, but I could endure the tedium of wrapping the C API in VB if it
was the quickest way to get API access in VB.

Don't you need a COM interface to solve this? Calling the C API from VB
is going to be tedious and error prone.
