Svn broken over https as a piped process

You may all think this trivial, but attempt this and see what you get.

svn ls https://svn.collab.net/repos/svn

Did you get the prompt about the certificate?

Now, imagine calling that from perl or from php via a pipe() call.

What? No content? It froze? Oh, you had to add an 'echo t' to get the answer.

Imagine that. Now the question I have, is whether htis behavior was
intentional or is there an automated mode planned for subversion where this is
no longer required?
