It doesn't break Subversion, it doesn't break Subversion, it doesn't
break Subversion... :-)

(Sorry to sound like a broken record, but this misunderstanding
appears to pervade this thread.)

A read-only working copy need not be a fatal error. This optimization
can be opportunistic; there is no correctness consequence if it
doesn't happen. (And if the working copy is read-only, any other
solution is going to fail too, even 'svn cleanup').
