And it was equally intolerable that SVN had separate logic to locate the
berkeley database, which usually differed from the logic that Apache chose
and linked in.

Don't go all "intolerable" on the community here. Changes are made for
reasons other than to make your life difficult. Sometimes those changes
have a fallout that was not envisioned. Bring them up, and look for a fix.
But "intolerable" sounds more like an ulimatum/threat than a cooperative
attitude.
