The point of the comment was to mean that you are allowed to have DIFFERENT file-name-patterns that match the same file: e.g. "*.rst" and "temp.*" both match "temp.rst".

Yes, I'd say that should be considered a parse error regardless of whether any additional clarification is needed in the autoprops documentation. Are you volunteering?
