Well... it doesn't. This is extremely easy to
reproduce and I'm not the only one to report this.

Take a peek at the user list, and a bit of google'ing
shows that ".xyz" is not without problems on Windows.

I guess most applications may work around this problem
by prefixing with "_" instead, such as with "_vti_cnf"
in FrontPage.
