Some time ago I submitted an experimental patch which used this call to
add additional BDB error information to the error chain.
It's a post 1.0 issue but look at it if you feel compelled to keep this
method around.

Also please keep in mind that the tree.c changes were just a cheesy test
until I knew whether or not the approach had merit.
