I think I step off the train at this point. I definitely can tell
the difference, and care very much, whether "diff -rBASE" contacts
the repository:

I often work without a net, and I often wonder what I've changed
lately, and the two "oftens" often intersect!

I also know people who are sadly networkologically remote from their
repositories, enough that the repo round trip is a human-palpable
delay.

And, for that matter, I do a lot of work in an "svn+ssh" repo where I
have to type a password in order to hit the repo, which I'd rather
not do if it can be avoided.
