I think part of svn_load_dirs slowness is just that is checkouts the
vendor branch in question.

The subversion book recommend svn_load_dirs, and infact doing vendor
imports manually is a painful operation (and in Ponie this is important
since I am tracking vendor changes from both Parrot and Perl). There
must be a supported way of doing vendor branches and vendor merging.

I also should say that I have been running subversion for a 9 months
and been very happy with it, but sadly it has failed to work with Ponie.
