can't check out subversion

I downloaded and compiled the 0.20.1 tarball in order to check out the
latest Subversion code (it's been a while for me). But now I get the
error shown below:

chip (src) 163 # svn --version
svn, version 0.20.1 (r5467)
   compiled Apr 9 2003, 22:13:52

[...]

chip (src) 162 # svn co http://svn.collab.net/repos/svn/trunk svn
svn: RA layer request failed
svn: The path was not part of a repository
svn: PROPFIND of /: could not connect to server

I got this error when I tried to use my 0.16 (okay, a long while)
version of svn to check out the latest code. I assumed it was a version
mis-match between the client and the server. But with 0.20.1 too? Is
this to be expected? Should I wait until the 0.21 tarball is released
(which I assume is soon)?

thanks
