relative paths in makefiles

I know makefiles can use purely relative paths, so why doesn't subversion's
build system? I just built it, along with apache 2, db4.0, apr, and apr-util
(rebuilt inside of apache2's source tree and my svn source tree I think), then
copied the directories to another machine only to see that my build tree was
hard coded.

This is silly! db4.0 managed just fine to install on the new machine, wasting
no time with redoing the entire build process. Everything else used hardcoded
paths.
