          This is a quite radical departure from our usual
          hack-and-test approach, but really, we've done enough damage
          that way..

I like to call that approach "hill climbing by brownian motion" and
point out that it often finds a slow path to a local but sub-optimal
maximum -- but it isn't always the wrong thing to do.
