I noticed the same thing under Debian doing a cp on the wc using
ra_local as well, fwiw. My repo was the linux 2.4.19 kernel tree
and took an unbearably long time to finish.

I'll be glad to run some tests on this if you'd like, just tell me
what type of info you're looking for.
