You should upgrade to the latest version.

I'm using gentoo as well, but I've installed the (masked) db-4.0.14 ebuild,
which seems to work fine. Note you'll have to be careful doing 'emerge world',
since it will reinstall db-3.2.9. Just emerge db-4.0.14 again.
