I think this is quite reasonable; the only gotcha is that if someone
else is providing the translation/untranslation routines, then a bug
in those routines will result in corrupt data being committed to the
repository, and it'll look like a bug in Subverion.

So we'll have to get in the habit of asking people who report bugs,
"Were you using the XYZ interface, which does pluggable translation?"

Sigh :-).
