And now the bug has magically vanished. First I did the following,
all static builds, intending to narrow in on the bug by binary search:

   reproduced with 1546
   reproduced with 1530
   failed to reproduce with 1520 (using backdated APR, due to API changes)
   failed to reproduce with 1525 (same)

At this point, I went and checked that 1530 still had the bug, just
for kicks. It didn't! So I tried again with my 1546 binary, and it
didn't have the bug anymore either. !?!???

Then I built head (1551), just to make sure. Nope, no more bug.

Philip, do you still see the bug at all??
