On a semi-related note, can we change the naming of the three backup files to
be
<file>.mine.#########
<file>.rxxxx.########
<file>.rxxxx.########

It makes it much easier to use tab completion, since in the current format you
have to look at the long number string and see which is which.

(Then again for graphical environments, it is probably easier to look at the
end of the filename). I guess it doesn't really matter. I just went to test
the new updating code with diff3, and I found it very awkward to actually LOOK
at any of the files.
