One clarification: when I mention "the project I'm working on", I'm not
talking about Subversion.

Good idea.

Of course it can. Most formally released products use keyword substitution
for this -- you just put the keyword inside a string, and print out that
strong as part of your 'about' screen. Pretty simple.

The project I'm working with has an additional thing: it adds the build time
into the executable.
