That was a bit more abrupt than I intended. Sorry about that. I do
understand your point, but I've found that one has to recompile things
anyway for newer versions of the shared libraries or the like, and the
paths to the shared libraries really don't change very often.

This is of course in my environment; other people's environments may be
different.

I learned to hate LD_LIBRARY_PATH from cruel experience and horror stories
from other folks doing the same sorts of things that I'm trying to do. I
can appreciate that it may well be a good solution for people who are more
looking at getting things to work on a single machine or set of machines
that they control.
