It's not hung -- I can update, status -u, etc.

Hmmm. Are you updating from a very long time ago? Because we haven't
yet rebuilt/recleaned the repository, the recent fs improvements don't
yet help us with our slow retrieval times for old revs. If you get
too far behind, Neon may time out.

What happens when you do a fresh checkout?
