'make install' doesn't take care of anything. I just always run from an
installed copy. Thus, I never have a version skew between build-dir and
install-dir libraries.

Regarding the problem itself -- the files with 'U' on the end. I saw that
once a long time ago. Hasn't happened in a very long while.

Sander did a "make extraclean" and rebuild and that didn't help. Maybe
extraclean isn't enough? Sander: can you try a fresh checkout and see if
that fixes it?
