I agree with Greg here. We've already been introducing switches without
enough thought -- the -M switch is a good example of the "hey, can I do
that? let's do it" approach.

+1 for Ben's proposal. It definitely doesn't suffer from the
design-by-committe syndrome, if that worries you: he got only gentle
guidance from the rest of us. :-)
