Yeah, we wrote that specification 15 months ago, and then "updated" it
about 6 months ago, to reflect the actual design changes we had made.
Authentication stuff just came into being in the last 2 months, so I'd
better go in there and do some more purging/rewriting. Sorry to lead
you astray. That document is about 80% accurate, at least. :-)
If you want to understand our PAM-like authentication, look at:

* issue #456, for future plans.
