My reputation for integrity is important to what I do. It's a
hard-earned asset, and I therefore feel I need to make the
consequences of calling me a liar painful and expensive for the
accuser (not that it happens often; most people have better sense).
I'm sorry you got caught in the crossfire.

My wife the attorney observes that if Larry doesn't back off I have grounds
to sue him for libel. That would be appropriate, as he once threatened
to sue me for equally silly reasons.

You know what the really funny part is? In the past, Larry and I have
gotten along pretty well face-to-face -- his remark about trying to be
friendly wasn't humbug. He only turns into a flaming twit when he's
out of eyeshot.
