Sounds like MVFS. Multi-Versioned File System is the basis for
Rational's ClearCase project. It is quite cool indeed. Functionally it
is implemented as a NFS/Kernel Mod strategy.

For linux it would have been great if the stackable filesystem stuff
got finished up and merged into the kernel. That would have provided an
excellent starting point for what you want to do, but alas it did not
make it.
