Going back to this idea... yes: it could be that automake isn't finding the
libtoolize command to run it and create the libtool-based files.

Hmm. Looking at the source, it definitely runs "libtoolize --automake" to
add the missing files when --add-missing is passed to automake. It appears
that an error message should appear if it can't find libtoolize.

OR: it is finding an old version of libtoolize. Do you have another on your
system?
