I've been in contact with him (that's how I got the numbers for the
"factor of 35 worse"). His last message said he's done with the
vdelta/vcdiff code for "Vcodex" but is still working on some of the
cryptography code. I'm hoping I'll be able to get a peek at his code
(new or old) soon.

Not that it's particularly urgent to us (though I'm terminally
impatient about these things). We have *something* now, which is
generally better than diff (but worse than diff+gzip) for text and is
about the same as diff+gzip for binary files. And it uses a fixed
amount of memory; diff will simply run out of memory on large binary
files, I've found. Even if we can do an order of magnitude better,
what we have now is still better than CVS.
