More debugging info is that if I build apr with ALLOC_DEBUG defined,
when I run checkout-test as Karl describes I get:

apr_error: #2, src_err 0, canonical err 2 : No such file or directory
  ����/SVN/entries

...the Yen symbol is the "uninitialized bytes in pool" filler.
